Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet HD Pro Multifunction Printer (44 in) is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a large architecture, engineering, GIS, or reprographics shop (15-75 seats) that needs 44-inch print + 42-inch scan on one integrated MFP.
  • You scan large rigid originals — the straight-through scan paper path with adjustable pressure handles thick or cardboard originals up to 15 mm (0.6 in).
  • You need real scanner resolution — 1200 dpi optical, 9600 dpi enhanced, with the 5-camera CCD system that captures fine line detail accurately.
  • You print 50-300 A1 plots per day, including B+ and Arch E1 — 21 seconds per A1, around 116 A1 prints per hour, dual-roll auto-switching standard.
  • You need PostScript for AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, or third-party RIP workflows — the bundle includes the T1700 PS printer base.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print up to ~400 A1 plots a day — the engine handles it; HP 730 ink cartridges (130-ml or 300-ml) keep per-page cost reasonable.
  • You scan a mix of color and grayscale — CCD captures detail in either at the same 13-in/sec scan throughput.
  • You're replacing an HD Pro 1 + standalone scanner — the HD Pro 2 MFP unifies the workflow and adds the gen-2 scanner.
  • You can live with the printer's 4.3-inch touchscreen plus a separate scanner control — the scanner has its own touch UI.
  • You don't currently scan thick rigid originals daily — the straight-through path is there if you need it; standard CIS scanners can't do this.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You only need print, no scan/copy — don't pay for the MFP. The T1700 / T1700DR PS is the print-only equivalent.
  • You only need 36-inch output — this is 44-inch. The T2600 (36-inch MFP) is right.
  • You scan only thin paper originals — a CIS-based MFP like the T2600 scans technical drawings just as well at lower cost.
  • You don't have the floor space — measure carefully; this is a long wide-format MFP plus a separate scanner unit.
  • You print fewer than 30 A1/day — you're paying for a 116-A1/hour production engine plus a CCD scanner. A T1600 + desktop document scanner is much cheaper.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet HD Pro MFP (44-in) is HP's flagship wide-format CAD/GIS/reprographics multifunction — a bundle of a 44-inch dual-roll T1700-class PostScript printer base and an HP HD Pro 2 44-in CCD scanner with a 5-camera system, built for large architecture, engineering, GIS, and reprographics shops (15-75 seats). It prints A1/D pages in 21 seconds (mechanical), around 116 A1 prints per hour, at up to 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi using HP Thermal Inkjet and the HP 730 ink cartridge family. The scanner is the differentiator: 1200 dpi optical, 9600 dpi enhanced, capable of scanning rigid originals up to 15 mm (0.6 in) thick through a straight-through paper path with adjustable pressure for very thin media. Scan throughput is up to 13 inches (33 cm) per second in either color or monochrome, with scan destinations to email, network folder, USB, printer HDD, or FTP. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet (1000Base-T), USB 3.1 gen 1 on the scanner, plus Hi-Speed USB 2.0 on the printer. Acoustic floor is 48 dB(A) operating, under 22 dB(A) idle. Security includes HP Sure Start BIOS self-heal, intrusion detection, IPSec, and 802.1X (printer base). The thing buyers regret: ordering the HD Pro for offices that scan only thin paper. The CCD-plus-rigid-original capability is what makes this MFP earn its premium over the T2600 (CIS scanner). If you scan as-builts, fabric, mounted boards, or museum artifacts, this is the right buy. If everything you scan is letter to A0 paper, the T2600 36-inch MFP saves serious money.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 2 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "We use this for architectural renderings and large format posters at our design firm. The 44-inch width handles our rolls perfectly, and the multifunction capabilities save us desk space. Color accuracy is solid and the scanning feature helps us archive old blueprints."
  • "Good printer for technical drawings, though the initial setup took longer than expected. Print quality is consistent and the automated paper feed works most of the time, but I've had a few jams with thicker media that required manual intervention."

FAQ

HP DesignJet HD Pro Multifunction Printer (44 in), common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (386) 261-8323 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The HP DesignJet HD Pro Multifunction Printer (44 in) does not use toner; it is an inkjet printer that uses HP 746 or HP 772 pigment-based ink cartridges. These cartridges come in high-capacity 300 ml sizes for high-volume printing. When you lease through us with ink included, you never pay for ink separately.
The HP DesignJet HD Pro Multifunction Printer (44 in) is a high-end, wide-format MFP designed for large CAD/GIS/reprographics shops, featuring a 44-inch dual-roll printer and a 42-inch CCD scanner with 1200 dpi optical resolution. It prints A1 pages in 21 seconds and supports PostScript. In contrast, the HP DesignJet T100 Printer is a single-function, entry-level 24-inch plotter for small teams, printing A1 pages in 35 seconds without PostScript support. The HD Pro is ideal for high-volume, high-resolution scanning and printing, while the T100 is a cost-effective solution for occasional plotting.
The HP DesignJet HD Pro Multifunction Printer (44 in) is designed for large architecture, engineering, GIS, or reprographics shops with 15-75 seats. It is not ideal for small businesses due to its high volume capacity (up to 116 A1 prints per hour) and advanced features like a 44-inch dual-roll printer and CCD scanner. Small businesses with lower print volumes may find it more cost-effective to consider a smaller, more affordable option like the HP DesignJet T100 Printer.
