Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet T520 Printer Series is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a small-to-mid architecture, engineering, or design firm (3-10 seats) that needs in-house A1/D plot output with photo-quality detail.
  • You print 10-50 A1 plots per day — 35 seconds per A1, around 70 A1 prints per hour, at 2400 x 1200 dpi.
  • You want a floor-standing 24-inch wide-format printer with a real 4.3-inch color touchscreen — not the 2.65-inch display on the T100/T120.
  • You print mixed CAD line drawings and color renderings — HP Thermal Inkjet with the HP 711 4-cartridge set handles both, plus HP Click software for project-set workflows.
  • You need wireless and mobile printing — Wi-Fi, HP ePrint, AirPrint, Mopria standard.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print up to ~75 A1 plots a day — the engine handles it but the HP 711 ink cartridges (29-ml CMY, 38-ml or 80-ml black) drive per-plot cost up vs. the T530's 80-ml options.
  • You can live with 1 GB memory — fine for typical CAD plots; very large GIS files or complex Adobe rasters may bottleneck.
  • You only print from one roll — single roll only; dual-roll auto-switching is a T1600DR / T1700 feature.
  • You can live without PostScript — this is non-PostScript. The T1600 PS / T1700 PS are the PostScript step-ups.
  • You want occasional letter/A3 prints from the input tray — the front input tray handles cut sheets, but it's not as clean as a dedicated office printer.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need to scan large originals — this is print-only. The MFP equivalent is the T2530 / T2600.
  • You need 36-inch (E-size) or 44-inch output — this is 24-inch only. The T520 is also available in 36-inch (CQ893C), or step up to the T530, T730, or T1600.
  • You print high volumes of presentation color or GIS maps for outdoor use — dye-based CMY isn't lightfast. Z-series pigment printers fit better.
  • You need PostScript — this model is non-PostScript. Look at the T1600 PS or T1700 PS for PostScript workflows.
  • You print more than 75 A1/day on tight deadlines — the T730 (25 sec/A1) and T1600 are real production engines; the T520 is the sweet spot for small offices, not departments.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet T520 24-in is HP's mid-tier wide-format CAD plotter — a single-function inkjet printer for small-to-mid architecture, engineering, and design teams (3-10 seats) that need in-house A1/D plot output with photo-quality detail. It prints A1/D pages in 35 seconds (mechanical) from the roll, around 70 A1 prints per hour, at up to 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi using HP Thermal Inkjet and the HP 711 4-cartridge set (dye-based CMY, pigment K). Roll handles up to 24-inch widths; the A4/A3 input tray takes 210 x 279 to 330 x 482 mm cut sheets. Memory is 1 GB — enough headroom for typical CAD plots. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet, Hi-Speed USB 2.0, and Wi-Fi standard; mobile printing via HP ePrint, AirPrint, and Mopria. Dimensions are 987 x 530 x 932 mm (38.9 x 20.9 x 36.7 in with stand) at 34 kg, with a real 4.3-inch color touchscreen for media-roll management and reprint queue. The thing buyers regret: not paying the small extra for the T530, which is the next-gen successor — same chassis, faster A1 (30 sec), more polished UI, slightly better paper handling, similar price. If you're shopping new, get the T530; if you're buying refurbished or want the T520 specifically for HP Click compatibility and known driver behavior, this is fine.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.
