Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet T930 Printer Series is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run an architecture, engineering, or GIS shop printing 36-inch line drawings, renderings, and maps every day.
  • You need 21-second A1 prints and 120 A1/hour throughput so a small team isn't queued up at the plotter.
  • You print on long rolls (up to 300 ft / 91.4 m) and want a 320 GB hard disk plus 64 GB file processing for fast PostScript and PDF jobs.
  • You want true 6-ink output (cyan, magenta, yellow, gray, photo black, matte black) for color renderings, not just CAD line work.
  • You already have an HP DesignJet on a service contract and want a same-family replacement that takes the same HP 727 ink cartridges (130 ml or 300 ml).
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print mostly mono CAD with occasional color renderings — the 6-ink system is overkill, but you'll appreciate it the day you do print color.
  • You want PostScript and PDF 1.7 — get the L2Y22A SKU instead of the base L2Y21A, or buy the C0C66A upgrade kit later.
  • You need scan or copy on the same chassis — this is print-only; pair it with the HP SD Pro 44-in or HD Pro 42-in scanner accessory, or look at the T830 MFP instead.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print fewer than 5-10 D-size sheets a week — you're paying for a 36-in production plotter to do 24-in or 11x17 work. Buy a desktop plotter or a tabloid MFP.
  • You need built-in scan/copy — the T930 is a single-function printer. Look at the T830 MFP or DesignJet SD Pro 44-in MFP.
  • You need a stacker for more than 50 A1 sheets — output capacity is the integrated 50-page stacker only; no high-capacity stacker option.
  • Your office can't accommodate a 55-inch wide, 192 lb floor-standing printer with media bin clearance.
  • You want Wi-Fi out of the box — the T930 ships with Gigabit Ethernet only; no built-in wireless on this model.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet T930 is a 36-inch, 6-ink production plotter built for architecture, engineering, and GIS teams that print line drawings, renderings, and maps as their daily job. It hits 21 seconds per A1/D page and 120 A1/hour in line-drawing mode, runs at up to 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi, and uses HP's 6-color HP 727 ink set (CMY, gray, photo black, matte black) for color renderings that don't look like CAD output. The integrated 50-sheet output stacker keeps prints flat and collated, and the 320 GB self-encrypting hard disk plus 64 GB file processing (1.5 GB RAM) make PostScript and PDF jobs feel snappy on the L2Y22A configuration. Standard connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet with the embedded HP Jetdirect print server, USB direct print, and HP Mobile Printing for AirPrint and Android. The thing buyers regret: no built-in scanner or copier — if you also need to copy red-line markups or scan as-builts on the same machine, get the T830 MFP or pair the T930 with an SD Pro 44-in scanner. Footprint is 55.1 x 36.1 x 43.7 inches and the printer weighs 192 lb assembled, so plan for floor space and clearance for the media bin and rear loading.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "We use this for our architecture firm's large format prints and it handles 36-inch rolls without any issues. The color accuracy is solid and the RIP software integrates well with our existing workflows."
  • "Good printer for technical drawings and posters. Print quality is consistent, though the ink costs add up quick if you're running high volume. Support team was helpful when we had setup questions."
  • "Upgraded from an older T series model and the speed improvement is noticeable. Handles matte and glossy media without fussing, and the maintenance is pretty straightforward compared to what I expected."

HP DesignJet T930 Printer Series, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (386) 261-8323 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The HP DesignJet T930 Printer Series does not use toner; it is an inkjet plotter that uses HP 727 ink cartridges. It ships with starter ink cartridges, and high-yield 300-ml cartridges can produce approximately 2,000 pages. Replacement cartridges include Matte Black (C1Q12A), Photo Black (F9J79A), Cyan (F9J76A), Magenta (F9J77A), Yellow (F9J78A), and Gray (F9J80A). When you lease through us with ink included, you never pay for ink separately.
The HP DesignJet T930 is a 36-inch single-function plotter designed for printing line drawings, renderings, and maps at 21 seconds per A1 page and 120 A1/hour. It uses HP 727 ink cartridges and has a 320 GB hard disk for fast processing. In contrast, the HP DesignJet HD Pro MFP (44 in) is a multifunction device with a 44-inch printer and a 42-inch CCD scanner, capable of scanning rigid originals up to 15 mm thick. It prints at 116 A1/hour and includes advanced security features like HP Sure Start BIOS self-heal. For small offices needing only printing, the T930 is a cost-effective choice, while the HD Pro MFP is ideal for larger shops requiring scanning and printing capabilities.
The HP DesignJet T930 Printer Series is well-suited for small businesses in architecture, engineering, or GIS that require high-volume printing of line drawings, renderings, and maps. It offers fast printing speeds of 21 seconds per A1 page and 120 A1/hour, along with a 320 GB hard disk for efficient processing. However, it lacks built-in scanning or copying capabilities, so businesses needing these features should consider the T830 MFP or pairing the T930 with an external scanner.
Yes, the HP DesignJet T930 Printer Series supports color printing. It uses a 6-ink system (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Gray, Photo Black, Matte Black) to produce high-quality color renderings at up to 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi. This makes it ideal for businesses that need both monochrome CAD output and vibrant color graphics.
