Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Ricoh IM 460FTL is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a healthcare practice, lab, or hospital unit that prints patient wristbands and labels alongside regular documents.
  • You need a locking paper tray to keep prescription pads, controlled-substance forms, or letterhead secured.
  • You print 2,000-7,000 pages a month and want a 46 ppm A4 desktop with healthcare-specific tray treatments.
  • You want enhanced firmware security for HIPAA-aligned environments without going floor-standing.
  • You're standardizing a clinic or pharmacy on a desktop unit that handles both letter documents and wristband media on one machine.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You're a non-healthcare office that just wants the locking tray for forms security — the wristband Teflon coating goes unused but doesn't hurt anything.
  • You print up to 10,000 pages a month — duty cycle handles it but you're outside the comfort zone, plan on more frequent toner.
  • You want wireless but didn't budget for it — Wi-Fi is an optional accessory.
  • You scan large stacks daily — the 50-sheet ADF keeps up with the 46 ppm engine but needs reloading on long jobs.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You don't need wristband printing or a locking tray — you're paying for a healthcare configuration you won't use. Get the standard IM 460F.
  • You need color. This is mono only — get the color IM C400F or healthcare-spec equivalent.
  • You need 11x17 / tabloid — letter/legal max here.
  • You need a 100+ sheet ADF for daily large-stack scanning — the 50-sheet feeder will frustrate intake clerks.
  • You print under 1,000 pages a month — this is overkill for low volume.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Ricoh IM 460FTL is the healthcare-spec version of the IM 460F — a desktop A4 monochrome MFP built specifically for clinics, hospital units, labs, and pharmacies that need to print patient wristbands and labels alongside regular documents. Same 46 ppm engine and 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution as the base IM 460F, same 50-sheet single-pass duplex ADF and 150,000-page monthly duty cycle. The differences are in the chassis: a 500-sheet Teflon-coated locking paper tray (the 'TL' in the name) optimized for synthetic wristband and label media, and enhanced firmware security tuned for healthcare environments. Standard paper capacity is 600 sheets, expandable to 2,100. The 7-inch Smart Operation Panel runs Android OS 10 with the same scan-to-email, network folder, USB, and SD card workflow as the rest of the IM family. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet plus USB 2.0 (host and device); Wi-Fi is optional. Fax is built in. The thing buyers regret: ordering this when they didn't actually need the healthcare configuration. If you don't print wristbands and don't need a lockable tray, the standard IM 460F is the same machine without the medical-grade tray treatments.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 1 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Ricoh machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Does everything we need it to do. Copy, print, scan, fax all work fine. The touchscreen interface takes getting used to but once you figure it out it's okay. My only complaint is the warm-up time feels a bit long when we first power it on in the morning."
