Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Ricoh IM 5000 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a department or workgroup of 30-80 people that needs in-house A3 (11x17) tabloid output at 50 ppm.
  • You print 10,000-25,000 pages a month — the IM 5000 is sized for that with serious headroom (200,000-page duty cycle).
  • You scan stacks of mixed-size originals daily and need single-pass duplex at 240 ipm to keep up.
  • You want a faster engine than the IM 3500 without jumping all the way to the IM 6000 enterprise tier.
  • You're already on Ricoh and want a floor-standing unit that drops into Streamline NX or @Remote.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 5,000-10,000 pages a month — the machine handles it without stress, you'll just amortize the lease over more months than necessary.
  • You want wireless out of the box — Wi-Fi is an optional accessory on the IM 5000, not standard.
  • You need finishing (staple, hole-punch, booklet) — bolt-on finishers are available, plan for the footprint and the extra invoice line.
  • You're replacing an older Aficio MP series — operators will adapt to the 10.1" Smart Operation Panel inside two to three weeks.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 3,000 pages a month — you're paying for a 50-ppm A3 floor unit and using a fraction of it. Get the IM 3500 or a desktop MFP.
  • You need color. This is mono only — get the IM C4510 or IM C4510SD for color A3 at this speed tier.
  • You want a small footprint — this is floor-standing at 23.1 x 25.7 x 37.9 inches and 168 lb. It needs its own corner.
  • You print more than 35,000 pages a month — step up to the IM 6000 for sustained heavy volume.
  • You need Wi-Fi standard — wireless is an optional add-on on this model.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Ricoh IM 5000 is a floor-standing A3 monochrome laser MFP for departments and workgroups (30-80 users) that need in-house tabloid output at production-grade speed. It prints and copies up to 50 ppm in black and white, scans at up to 240 ipm duplex via the 220-sheet single-pass ADF, and is rated for a 200,000-page monthly duty cycle (the realistic comfort zone is 10,000-25,000 pages/month). First copy out is 2.9 seconds — quick enough that walk-up users don't queue. Standard paper capacity is 1,200 sheets, expandable to 4,700 with optional large-capacity trays. The 10.1-inch Smart Operation Panel runs an Android-style interface with cloud connectors, embedded browser, and NFC pairing — same UI as the rest of the IM family, which is genuinely useful when you're standardizing a fleet. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet plus USB 2.0 standard; Wi-Fi and NFC are optional. The thing buyers regret: paying for the 50 ppm engine and not actually running long enough jobs to need it. If your monthly volume is under 10,000 pages, the IM 3500 (35 ppm, same chassis, same panel) is the right call.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 2 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Ricoh machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "We got this for our small office about a year ago and it's been solid. The scan-to-email feature saves us time, and the print quality is consistent even when we're pushing through high volume jobs. Toner costs are reasonable too."
  • "The IM 5000 does everything we need it to do. Setup took longer than I expected and the manual could be clearer, but once it was configured the device has been reliable. Color output looks good for our marketing materials."
