Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP PageWide XL 8000 Printer is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a high-volume plan room or commercial reprographics business pushing 5,000-15,000+ D-size pages a month and need 30 D/A1 pages/minute (1,500 D/hr).
  • You want one device to deliver mixed mono+color sets in 50% of the time vs. running a separate mono LED plus color printer.
  • You need up to 6 rolls with auto-switching so the printer keeps running while the operator handles other work.
  • You need dual 775-ml ink supplies with auto-switch — replace cartridges while the printer is running, no downtime.
  • You need HP SmartStream production workflow software and HP Click for batch printing.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 2,500-5,000 D-size sheets a month — overbuilt at this volume, but the dual ink supplies and 6-roll option pay back if you do batch jobs.
  • You don't need scan or copy on the chassis — the 8000 is single-function (print only). Pair with HP HD/SD Pro Scanner accessories or look at the 8200 MFP.
  • You need PostScript and PDF — included on the embedded controller (with Adobe PDF Print Engine 4).
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 1,500 D-size sheets a month — you're paying for the fastest large-format printer in the market and using maybe 10% of it. Get the 5100/5200 instead.
  • You need built-in scan or copy — the 8000 is print-only. Look at the 8200 MFP for an integrated scanner.
  • You don't have a print-room with floor-loading clearance — this is a production-class plotter with a separate high-capacity stacker.
  • You need photo-quality color graphics — 4-color CMYK pigment is tuned for CAD, maps, and POS posters, not photo reproduction.
  • You need the 15.6-in touchscreen — the 8000 ships with the 8-in touchscreen; the 8200 generation has the 15.6-in.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP PageWide XL 8000 is the fastest large-format mono+color printer in the PageWide XL line — 30 D/A1 pages per minute, 1,500 D/hr, with a 75 ft/min (23 m/min) print engine. It's built for high-volume plan rooms, commercial reprographics shops, and in-house print operations that push 5,000-15,000+ D-size pages a month. It prints at 1200 x 1200 dpi using HP 841 PageWide XL pigment inks (water- and fade-resistant on uncoated bond), with 8 cartridges (2 x 775-ml per color) and auto-switch — the operator can replace a cartridge while the printer is running. Two rolls are standard with auto-switching, expandable to 6 rolls. Time between pages is as low as 0.15 seconds; roll switches happen in under 5 seconds. The embedded controller includes the Adobe PDF Print Engine 4 for fast native PDF processing. An 8-inch capacitive touchscreen with status light reports current state and progressive alerts (out of paper, out of ink). The 8000 is single-function (print only) — if you need scan/copy, pair it with an HP HD Pro 2 42-in or SD Pro 44-in scanner accessory, or look at the 8200 MFP. Output is the standard basket plus the high-capacity stacker (CZ309B includes the stacker). The thing buyers regret: ordering the printer-only CZ309A SKU and then realizing they need the high-capacity stacker for unattended runs — get the CZ309B configuration. This is a production install: floor-loading clearance, plus space for the stacker and optional online folder.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been using this for our architectural firm for about 8 months now and it handles the large format printing we need without constantly jamming like our old machine. The speed is decent and the color accuracy on technical drawings is solid."
  • "Good printer overall but the learning curve on the software was steeper than I expected. Once we figured it out, the XL 8000 prints quality signage and banners for our small business. Ink costs are reasonable enough."
  • "Upgraded from an older HP model and this thing is a workhorse. The footprint is manageable for our print shop and it runs all day without issues. Support from HP has been helpful on the couple times we needed it."

FAQ

HP PageWide XL 8000 Printer, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (386) 261-8323 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The HP PageWide XL 8000 Printer does not use traditional toner powder. Instead, it uses high-capacity 775 ml ink cartridges with HP PageWide XL pigment inks. The printer ships with starter ink cartridges, and replacement cartridges are available for continuous high-volume printing. When you lease through us with ink included, you never pay for ink separately.
The HP PageWide XL 8000 is a single-function printer designed for high-volume production, printing at 30 D/A1 pages per minute with dual 775-ml ink cartridges and auto-switching. It is ideal for plan rooms and reprographics shops pushing 5,000-15,000+ D-size pages monthly. In contrast, the HP DesignJet HD Pro MFP (44 in) is a multifunction device with a 44-inch printer and integrated 42-inch CCD scanner, printing at 116 A1 pages per hour and scanning rigid originals up to 15 mm thick. The PageWide XL 8000 is faster for printing but lacks scanning capabilities, while the HD Pro MFP offers scanning and copying but at a lower print speed. For small offices needing both printing and scanning, the HD Pro MFP is a better fit.
The HP PageWide XL 8000 Printer is designed for high-volume environments, such as plan rooms and commercial reprographics shops, pushing 5,000-15,000+ D-size pages monthly. Its speed of 30 D/A1 pages per minute and production-level features like dual ink cartridges and auto-switching rolls make it overkill for most small businesses. If your monthly print volume is under 5,000 pages, consider a more compact and cost-effective option.
Yes, the HP PageWide XL 8000 Printer supports color printing. It uses HP 841 PageWide XL pigment inks in CMYK colors, delivering vibrant and fade-resistant prints. This makes it suitable for technical documents, CAD drawings, and other applications requiring both monochrome and color output.
