Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet T100 Printer is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a small architecture, engineering, or design firm (1-5 seats) that needs in-house A1/D plot output without paying for a T520 or T530.
  • You print a handful of A1 plots per day — 35 seconds per A1, around 70 A1 prints per hour from the roll.
  • You want a real 24-inch wide-format plotter on a desktop or stand, not a service-bureau dependency for every revision.
  • You print mostly mono line drawings with occasional color renderings — the HP 712 4-cartridge ink set (cyan, magenta, yellow, dye-based; black is pigment) handles both.
  • You need wireless and Mopria/AirPrint mobile printing — Wi-Fi is standard on this generation.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print up to ~30 A1 plots a day — the engine handles it but you'll burn through the HP 712 cartridges; consider the 80-ml black if monos are heavy.
  • You can live with 1200 x 1200 optimized dpi — fine for line drawings, less so for high-end photographic renderings (the T530 jumps to 2400 x 1200).
  • You don't have a stand — the printer is desktop-friendly at ~25.5 kg but you'll want the optional stand if you're feeding rolls regularly.
  • You can live without PostScript — this is a non-PostScript model. If you need true PostScript for AutoCAD/Adobe workflows, look at the T1600.
  • You only print from one roll — there's no dual-roll on this model; that's a T1700 / T1600DR feature.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need to scan large originals — this is print-only. The MFP equivalent in this class is the T2530 / T2600.
  • You need 36-inch (E-size) or 44-inch output — this is 24-inch only. Step up to the T530 36-inch (5ZY62A), T730, or T1600.
  • You print high volumes of color presentations or GIS maps — the dye-based cyan/magenta/yellow inks aren't lightfast for outdoor or long-archive use. The Z-series pigment printers are right for that.
  • You need PostScript — this model doesn't ship with PostScript drivers. The T1600 PS or T1700 PS handle it.
  • You want HP Click + project-set printing software workflows — this hardware works but the T520/T530 are the ones HP positions for serious project-set printing.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet T100 24-in is HP's entry-level wide-format CAD plotter — a single-function inkjet printer for small architecture, engineering, and design teams (1-5 seats) that need occasional in-house A1/D plot output without paying for the T520 or T530. It prints A1/D pages in 35 seconds (mechanical), roughly 70 A1 prints per hour from the roll, at up to 1200 x 1200 optimized dpi using HP Thermal Inkjet technology and the HP 711 / HP 712 4-cartridge ink set (dye-based cyan/magenta/yellow, pigment-based black). Roll feed handles 279 to 610 mm widths; the input tray takes A4/A3 cut sheets up to 330 x 482 mm; manual feed handles up to 610 x 1897 mm. Memory is 256 MB. Connectivity is Fast Ethernet (100Base-T), Hi-Speed USB 2.0, and Wi-Fi standard — no PostScript drivers in this model (raster driver only for macOS and Windows). Dimensions are 987 x 530 x 285 mm (38.9 x 20.9 x 11.2 in) at 25.5 kg, so it fits on a credenza or the optional B3Q35A stand. The thing buyers regret: assuming this prints PostScript. AutoCAD plots fine through HP-GL/2, but if your workflow needs PostScript or color critical work, step up to the T530 (2400 x 1200 dpi, dual driver) or T1600 PS. For everyone else doing 5-15 plots a week, this is the cheapest way to bring 24-inch plot in-house.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Got this for our small architecture firm and it handles 24-inch technical drawings without any issues. The color accuracy is solid for client presentations, and setup was straightforward. Definitely worth it for the price point."
  • "Using this for home-based design work and it's been reliable so far. The mobile printing feature works well enough, though the ink cartridge costs add up faster than I expected with regular use."
  • "Replaced an older model and this one is noticeably faster at printing large format documents. The footprint is smaller too, which helps in our tight office space. No major complaints after 8 months."

FAQ

HP DesignJet T100 Printer, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (386) 261-8323 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The HP DesignJet T100 Printer does not use toner; it uses ink cartridges. It ships with starter HP 711 or HP 712 ink cartridges, which include a black cartridge (pigment-based) and color cartridges (dye-based cyan, magenta, and yellow). The high-yield HP 711XL cartridges offer up to 2,300 black pages and 1,500 color pages. Replacement cartridges are available in standard and high-yield options. When you lease through us with ink included, you never pay for ink separately.
The HP DesignJet T100 is a single-function 24-inch inkjet plotter designed for small teams (1-5 seats), printing A1 pages in 35 seconds at 1200 x 1200 dpi. The HP DesignJet HD Pro MFP (44 in) is a multifunction device with a 44-inch dual-roll PostScript printer and a 42-inch CCD scanner, built for larger teams (15-75 seats). The HD Pro prints A1 pages in 21 seconds at 2400 x 1200 dpi and includes advanced scanning capabilities for rigid originals up to 15 mm thick. The T100 is ideal for small businesses needing basic plotting, while the HD Pro is suited for large firms requiring high-volume printing and scanning. For small offices, the T100 offers a cost-effective solution for occasional plotting.
Yes, the HP DesignJet T100 Printer is well-suited for small businesses, particularly architecture, engineering, or design teams of 1-5 seats. It handles occasional A1/D plot output at a rate of 70 prints per hour, making it ideal for businesses printing 5-15 plots per week. Its compact size and wireless connectivity make it easy to integrate into small office environments. However, if your business requires higher volumes or advanced features like PostScript support, consider upgrading to a commercial option such as the HP DesignJet T530 or T1600 PS.
Yes, the HP DesignJet T100 Printer supports color printing. It uses a 4-cartridge ink set (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) to produce color outputs. The black ink is pigment-based for sharp lines, while the color inks are dye-based, suitable for occasional color renderings. This makes it a good choice for businesses that need both monochrome and color plotting.
