Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet T1700 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a large architecture, engineering, GIS, or print-service shop (15-50 seats) that needs 44-inch wide-format output with photo-quality detail.
  • You print 50-200 A1 plots per day, including B+ and oversized E1 sheets — 20 seconds per A1, 116 A1 prints per hour.
  • You need dual-roll auto-switching for long batch jobs that mix paper types or widths — pick the dr variant (1VD88A).
  • You need PostScript for AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, or third-party RIP workflows — pick the PS variant (1VD87A or 1VD88A).
  • You need device security and the heaviest HP wide-format spec: 128 GB memory, 500 GB hard drive, HP Sure Start BIOS self-heal, intrusion detection, whitelisting.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print up to ~250 A1 plots a day — the engine handles it; the HP 730 ink cartridges (130-ml or 300-ml) keep per-page cost reasonable.
  • You only need single-roll — pick the W6B55A; the dual-roll dr variants are the production-shop pick.
  • You can live without scan/copy — this is print-only. The HD Pro 2 MFP is the scan-equipped step-up.
  • You're stepping up from a T1600 or T2530 — operators adapt quickly; the touchscreen workflow and HP Click project-set printing carry over.
  • You don't need 64-bit GIS file rasterization daily — 128 GB / 500 GB is more capacity than typical CAD shops need, but it's there for the heaviest GIS jobs.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need to scan large originals — this is print-only. The HP DesignJet HD Pro 2 MFP is the scan-equipped equivalent.
  • You only need 36-inch output — don't pay for the 44-inch chassis. The T1600 / T1600DR is right.
  • You print high volumes of outdoor presentation color or GIS maps — dye-based CMY isn't lightfast. The Z6 / Z9+ pigment printers fit better.
  • You don't have the floor space — the dr variant footprint is large; measure for it.
  • You print fewer than 30 A1/day — you're paying for a 200-A1/hour production engine and using under 15% of it. The T730 or T530 36-inch is the right size.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet T1700 series is HP's flagship production wide-format CAD/GIS plotter — a 44-inch single- or dual-roll inkjet printer for large architecture, engineering, GIS, and print-service shops (15-50 seats) that need oversized output (B+, Arch E1) and the heaviest HP wide-format spec. It prints A1/D pages in around 20 seconds (mechanical) from the roll, 116 A1 prints per hour, at up to 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi using HP Thermal Inkjet and the HP 730 ink cartridge family (130-ml or 300-ml). The dr variants add a second roll with auto-switching for long batch jobs. The PS variants ship with native PostScript drivers for AutoCAD, Adobe, and third-party RIP workflows. Memory is 128 GB with a 500 GB encrypted hard drive — built for the heaviest GIS file rasterization. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet (1000Base-T) plus Hi-Speed USB 2.0; Wi-Fi is optional. Security is the reason large firms pick this over the Canon TX-4000: HP Sure Start BIOS self-heal, run-time intrusion detection, whitelisting, IPSec, 802.1X, encrypted hard disk, secure boot. The 4.3-inch color touchscreen handles media-roll management, project-set queue, and accounting. The thing buyers regret: ordering the dual-roll dr variant for an office that doesn't actually batch-print. If you change rolls 1-2x a week, the single-roll W6B55A saves money and floor depth — the dr is for production shops that batch-print weekly and never want to touch the spindle.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been using this for large format printing in our architecture firm for about 8 months now. The print quality on technical drawings is sharp, and the 24-inch width handles most of our standard sheets without needing to tile. Setup was straightforward and the driver has been stable."
  • "Good printer overall for our graphic design studio. Color accuracy is decent for proofs, though I wish the software was a bit more intuitive for color management. Printing speed is acceptable and reliability has been solid so far."
  • "Replaced an older plotter with this and the difference is noticeable. Faster warm-up time, quieter operation, and the media handling is much more flexible. Haven't had any paper jams or quality issues in the few months I've had it."

FAQ

HP DesignJet T1700, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (386) 261-8323 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

Yes, the HP DesignJet T1700 ships with a starter ink cartridge. The starter cartridge yield is not specified, but replacement cartridges are available in standard (130 ml) and high-yield (300 ml) options, such as the HP 730 series. When you lease through us with toner included, you never pay for toner separately.
The HP DesignJet T1700 is a single-function 44-inch wide-format printer, while the HP DesignJet HD Pro MFP (44 in) is a multifunction device that includes a 44-inch printer and a 42-inch scanner. The T1700 is ideal for print-only environments, whereas the HD Pro MFP adds scanning capabilities, including a 5-camera CCD system for scanning rigid originals up to 15 mm thick. The HD Pro MFP also includes a larger 15.6-inch display and additional scan destinations like email, network, and FTP. For small offices that only need printing, the T1700 is a more cost-effective choice.
The HP DesignJet T1700 is designed for large architecture, engineering, GIS, or print-service shops (15-50 seats) that require high-volume wide-format printing. Its production-level speed (116 A1 prints per hour) and advanced features like dual-roll auto-switching and PostScript support may be excessive for small businesses with lower print volumes. If your business prints fewer than 30 A1 plots per day, consider a smaller model like the HP DesignJet T730 or T530.
Yes, the HP DesignJet T1700 supports color printing using the HP 730 ink cartridge family, which includes cyan, magenta, yellow, matte black, photo black, and gray cartridges.
